Halloween Week – Summer Camp at Milestones

A boy with hands up and fingers curled makes a face like he is growling or roaringHalloween week was an amazing opportunity for the children to enhance their dramatic play with a variety of costumes.

Through dramatic play, children accept and assign roles, and act them out. This is the time when they break through the walls of reality, pretend to be someone or something different from themselves, and dramatize situation and actions to go along with the roles they have chosen to play. This is a great developmental learning process, which allows children to develop skills such as abstract thinking, literacy, math, and social studies in a natural manner. The children took up princess and knight play, doctor play, monster play, and super hero play. They all enjoyed pretending to be different individuals with their friends.

Building a Fire Engine

Learning about community helpers—police officers, doctors, etc.—and pretending to be them was an amazing experience for the children. By participating in dramatic play with costumes, and acting out behaviors of community helpers, children develop important social/emotional skills and are more comfortable with the actual community helpers. It is important for children to learn and understand their role in a community and to understand that there are safe, friendly people to help them if they get sick or have emergencies. We had a blast pretending to be fire fighters.  Jennifer made a fire truck with the children that we used to put out fires around the school.

Also, as you know, our beloved guinea pig Polly died during this week. So, we wrote letters during our post office day to help cope with our loss. It was a great way for the children to let out their emotion on paper and speak to their peers about their feelings.

Dinosaur Week – Summer Camp at Milestones

It’s a dinosaur watering hole!

Dinosaur week was a blast! The children enjoyed having so many dinosaurs to work with. Some friends got together and created a dinosaur zoo. They ensured the dinosaurs had a home by placing leaves and sticks, a watering hole for them, and plenty of shade from the sun. A child’s imagination is infinite.

For art, the children made dinosaur footprints with water colors and play dough. The children were amazed by the variety of prints each dinosaur creates, from big to small foot prints. For science and math, the children counted how many dinosaurs they rescued from frozen eggs made of ice and baking soda. They dissolved the eggs with either salt or vinegar.

We made delicious dinosaur cookies that the children helped make by cutting out dinosaur cookies. They enjoyed their delicious work during lunch. Dinosaur dancing was thrilling. The children used scarves while they danced to “We are the Dinosaurs.” After all this fun, we say goodbye to the dinosaurs and welcome our next theme.
