A New Year and a New Space at Milestones

Posted on: September 14th, 2016 by Milena

During the teacher in-service weeks before the 2016-2017 school year began, Milestones staff worked hard to transform the spaces for the new year. The last week was exhausting, but the end product makes it all worth it. We want to thank our community for their your tremendous patience. Thanks to the parents who were able to help us during the week. Taking the time to help us made in-service easier and contributed to making a quality environment for our students. We completely transformed Milestones!

We have created an entire new environment for the children, therefore we want to have a fresh start. We will start the year by taking a lot of pictures in order to document the various projects we will participate in. Last week, we focused on getting to know each other and observing the children’s likes and dislikes. We want to teach the children how to use each space, which will help the children develop a sense of community. We created this space for them, therefore the must use and maintain the space together. We can’t wait to sea what’s in store!

Water Play Week – Summer Camp at Milestones

Splish, splash, bubble, bubble, pop! Water play, both indoor and outdoor, is a unique activity for children because it’s always available, open-ended, and provides opportunities for extended learning.

It provides opportunities for children to experiment with math and science concepts, strengthen their physical skills, advance their social and emotional skills, and enhance language development. Water play relieves tension by encouraging children to release their emotions with pouring, pounding, and swooshing. In addition, social skills expand as children play cooperatively; negotiate; and share equipment, space, and materials. The children enjoyed it even more with the amazing weather we had last week.

Halloween Week – Summer Camp at Milestones

A boy with hands up and fingers curled makes a face like he is growling or roaringHalloween week was an amazing opportunity for the children to enhance their dramatic play with a variety of costumes.

Through dramatic play, children accept and assign roles, and act them out. This is the time when they break through the walls of reality, pretend to be someone or something different from themselves, and dramatize situation and actions to go along with the roles they have chosen to play. This is a great developmental learning process, which allows children to develop skills such as abstract thinking, literacy, math, and social studies in a natural manner. The children took up princess and knight play, doctor play, monster play, and super hero play. They all enjoyed pretending to be different individuals with their friends.
