Water Play Week – Summer Camp at Milestones

children play with water and toys in a tub set on top of a table.

Splish, splash, bubble, bubble, pop! Water play, both indoor and outdoor, is a unique activity for children because it’s always available, open-ended, and provides opportunities for extended learning.

unnamed (17)Water play fosters learning in all developmental areas. It provides opportunities for children to experiment with math and science concepts, strengthen their physical skills, advance their social and emotional skills, and enhance language development. Water play relieves tension by encouraging children to release their emotions with pouring, pounding, and swooshing. In addition, social skills expand as children play cooperatively; negotiate; and share equipment, space, and materials. The children enjoyed it even more with the amazing weather we had last week.

Halloween Week – Summer Camp at Milestones

A boy with hands up and fingers curled makes a face like he is growling or roaringHalloween week was an amazing opportunity for the children to enhance their dramatic play with a variety of costumes.

Through dramatic play, children accept and assign roles, and act them out. This is the time when they break through the walls of reality, pretend to be someone or something different from themselves, and dramatize situation and actions to go along with the roles they have chosen to play. This is a great developmental learning process, which allows children to develop skills such as abstract thinking, literacy, math, and social studies in a natural manner. The children took up princess and knight play, doctor play, monster play, and super hero play. They all enjoyed pretending to be different individuals with their friends.

Community Helpers – Summer Camp at Milestones

Building a Fire Engine

Learning about community helpers—police officers, doctors, etc.—and pretending to be them was an amazing experience for the children. By participating in dramatic play with costumes, and acting out behaviors of community helpers, children develop important social/emotional skills and are more comfortable with the actual community helpers. It is important for children to learn and understand their role in a community and to understand that there are safe, friendly people to help them if they get sick or have emergencies. We had a blast pretending to be fire fighters.  Jennifer made a fire truck with the children that we used to put out fires around the school.

Also, as you know, our beloved guinea pig Polly died during this week. So, we wrote letters during our post office day to help cope with our loss. It was a great way for the children to let out their emotion on paper and speak to their peers about their feelings.
